Quinta do Noval has been making Port since 1715. The 2017 Nacional is produced in minuscule quantities, released by allocation only, dense, inky and built to age for decades. The 2018 vintage gave them one of their finest La Craus in recent memory: deep garrique, kirsch, black olive and an iron backbone built for decades. In a 3-litre, where the slower oxygen exchange means the wine will develop more gracefully and live even longer than a standard bottle. This is a serious cellar purchase for a serious collector. Penfolds Grange is Australia’s most celebrated wine — listed on the South Australian Heritage Register — and one of the world’s great Shiraz benchmarks. Created by Max Schubert in 1951 against the explicit instructions of Penfolds’ board, who ordered production stopped. He continued quietly in secret. The board eventually tasted a vertical and reversed their decision immediately. These three consecutive vintages represent Grange at the height of its recent powers.
