Veronica Ortega 2015 Quite Mencia
100% Mencia | Alc: 14%
Castilla y Leon, Bierzo, Spain

Winemaker’s notes:
When Veronica Ortega settled in Bierzo, she acquired several plots of old-vine Mencia near the village of Valtuille de Abrajo on sandy and clay soils. After a few vintages of just making a single wine from these vines, ROC, Veronica began to discern that the sandier plots were more expressly and delicately floral and benefited from a shorter time in barrel. From this realization, Quite was born in 2012. Since this first vintage, Veronica has continued to seek ways to emphasize the innate qualities of Quite – she now destems the fruit entirely, ferments in tank, has shortened the maceration, and employs 800L amphorae for aging a portion of the wine.
A Mencia that is light and fruit dominant, possessing characters such as raspberry, red currant, boysenberry, pomegranate, black licorice, spice cake, black pepper, Asian spice and crushed gravel

Pairs well with Steak au Poivre, corned beef, charcuterie, game, carne asada, grilled portabello, mushroom risotto, wild rice pilaf and smoked tofu.

Critical Acclaim:
“I’ve been unlucky with this wine before, but the 2015 Quite was finally hitting it on all cylinders, with an earthy nose intermixed with heady and perfumed notes of violets and decayed leaves with a spicy twist, quite attractive and changing quickly in the glass. There is very good complexity here and the palate is elegant, with refined tannins and surprisingly good freshness given the character of the year and the fact that Mencía is never very high in acidity. Tasty, approachable and full of character.” 92 Pts – The Wine Advocate
