The Douro Doctrine

A millennium, a great decade, and two visions of 2017 — four bottles that make the case for Vintage Port once and for all

The Douro Valley has been producing great fortified wine for three centuries. This pack makes the argument in four bottles.

A Fonseca 2000 that has been quietly evolving since the millennium. A Taylor Fladgate 2009 that is drinking magnificently right now. Two 2017s — one from Quinta do Noval, one from Taylor Fladgate — that are firmly in the waiting game and will reward patience handsomely. Three houses, four decades, one very clear doctrine: great Port is one of the world’s most underappreciated wines, and these bottles are here to fix that.

The Bottles

1

Fonseca Vintage Porto 2000

Douro · Vintage Port · 2000 · Fonseca · Open now

Twenty-five years in bottle. Still going. Still magnificent.

The 2000 vintage produced Ports of extraordinary concentration and character, and Fonseca’s is a landmark wine. A quarter century of bottle age has transformed its youthful power into something altogether more nuanced — dried fruits, walnut, beeswax, dark chocolate and a sweetness that has mellowed from intensity to grace. This is the bottle you open first, slowly, over an entire evening. Decant at least two hours before serving. Then wonder why you don’t drink more Port.

2

Taylor Fladgate Vintage Porto 2009

Douro · Vintage Port · 2009 · Taylor Fladgate · Peak drinking now

The 2009 is in its prime. Don’t wait much longer.

Taylor Fladgate is one of Port’s great houses, and the 2009 vintage gifted them a wine of exceptional balance and vibrancy. Now in its mid-life sweet spot, it shows luscious dark berry, fig, mocha and a structural elegance that sets Taylor apart from almost everyone else in the Douro. Seventeen years in bottle and the fruit is still singing. This is the bottle in the pack you open without guilt and drink without restraint.

3

Quinta do Noval 2017 Vintage Port

Douro · Vintage Port · 2017 · Quinta do Noval · Cellar 5–15 years

One of the Douro’s most historic estates. One of its best recent vintages.

Quinta do Noval has been farming its extraordinary schist terraces above Pinhão since the 18th century, and the 2017 is a wine built for the long haul. Dense, inky and concentrated with blackberry, dark plum and a tannic structure that is currently all scaffolding — everything is there, but it needs time to assemble itself into something magnificent. A perfect candidate for the back of the cellar and the front of the mind.

4

Taylor Fladgate Classic Vintage Porto 2017

Douro · Vintage Port · 2017 · Taylor Fladgate · Cellar 5–15 years

Same vintage as the Noval. Different house. Fascinating comparison.

Tasting a Taylor and a Noval from the same great vintage side by side is one of Port’s great pleasures — two different philosophies, two different terroirs, two entirely different expressions of the same extraordinary year. Taylor’s 2017 is typically precise and structured, with a refinement and elegance that is the house signature. Open both 2017s on the same evening. Argue politely about which you prefer. There is no wrong answer — only a very good evening.
