A vertical journey through Vieux Télégraphe’s legendary La Crau vineyard — four vintages, one extraordinary terroir
There are producers you respect, and there are producers you return to every single year regardless of what else is on the shelf. The Brunier family at Vieux Télégraphe falls firmly into the second category.
For decades, their La Crau vineyard has produced one of Châteauneuf-du-Pape’s most consistent and compelling wines — garrigue-dusted, structured, deeply southern Rhône in character, and built to evolve beautifully in bottle. Four consecutive vintages. Same vineyard. Same family. Wildly different stories.
The Bottles
Vieux Télégraphe 2015 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2015 · Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
The one built for the long haul — and already showing beautifully
Deep garrigue, black olive and kirsch with a structure that was clearly designed with patience in mind. The 2015 Southern Rhône was a landmark vintage — concentrated, powerful, dense — and La Crau wore it magnificently. It’s been in bottle long enough now to have softened at the edges without losing an ounce of its core. Decant generously and give it the time it deserves.
Vieux Télégraphe 2017 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2017 · Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
Freshness and lift — the elegant outlier in the vertical
A slightly cooler year gave the 2017 more aromatic precision and a liveliness that sets it apart from its siblings. Still rich and layered, but with a luminous quality — lavender, black cherry and stony minerality woven through the whole thing. The one in this vertical you’ll reach for first and finish fastest.
Vieux Télégraphe 2018 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2018 · Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
The hedonist. No apology offered.
A warm vintage produced a wine of great density and plushness — lush, opulent, dark-fruited, with a velvety texture that is pure southern Rhône indulgence. Less cerebral than the 2017, more immediately gratifying than the 2015. The 2018 is for the evening when you stop analyzing and start enjoying.
Vieux Télégraphe 2019 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2019 · Domaine du Vieux Télégraphe
The finest of the four. Don’t open it yet.
The 2019 may be the definitive La Crau of recent memory — extraordinary balance and purity, perfumed and powerful with seamless tannins and a finish that simply refuses to stop. One of the great VT vintages of the modern era. Buy two if you can. Open one now out of curiosity. Hide the other for a decade and thank yourself later.

Four vintages. One vineyard. One very good reason to sit down slowly.
