The Télégraphe Trinity
Two vintages, two tiers, one legendary domaine — a masterclass in a single sitting
This is not three random bottles. This is a conversation.
The Brunier family at Vieux Télégraphe have been farming La Crau for generations, and the 2019 vintage gave them two of the finest wines in recent memory — their flagship La Crau and their so-called “second wine” Télégramme, a label that does the term a profound disservice. Pair those with the lush, opulent 2018 La Crau as your opening act, and you have an evening that starts in pure indulgence and ends in genuine revelation. Open them in order. Take notes if you’re that kind of person. Argue about which one you’d take to a desert island. There is no wrong answer.
The Bottles
Vieux Télégraphe 2018 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2018 · Start here
The hedonist. No apology offered.
A warm vintage produced a wine of great density and plushness — lush, opulent, dark-fruited, with a velvety texture that is pure southern Rhône indulgence. Less cerebral than what follows, more immediately gratifying. The 2018 is for the moment you stop analyzing and start enjoying. An ideal opening act precisely because it asks nothing of you.
Vieux Télégraphe 2019 Télégramme Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2019 · Open second
The “second wine” that embarrasses most producers’ first.
Calling Télégramme a second wine is technically accurate and deeply unfair to every other producer in the appellation. More approachable young than its sibling La Crau, with ripe cherry, garrigue and a warm generous finish that lingers well past what the price suggests. The 2019 vintage shines here — and tasted alongside the La Crau, it tells you everything about what terroir selection actually means.
Vieux Télégraphe 2019 La Crau Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Châteauneuf-du-Pape · Grenache blend · 2019 · Finish here. Slowly.
Finish here. Slowly.
The 2019 may be the finest La Crau of recent memory — extraordinary balance and purity, perfumed and powerful with seamless tannins and a finish that simply refuses to end. Tasted after the Télégramme, the step up in complexity and concentration is immediately apparent and quietly astonishing. This is the bottle you’ll still be thinking about the following morning.
